Land Acquisition

Protecting our environmentally significant areas makes environmental sense, and provides economic and social benefits.  For example:

  • Mammals, birds, insects and plants require natural areas to survive;
  • Publicly-owned natural areas play an important role in the physical and mental well-being of our population by making these lands available for passive recreational interests, such as hiking and bird watching.
  • Providing water discharge into the Spencer Creek system benefits fisheries and downstream areas;
  • Protecting natural areas greatly enhances the aesthetics of the new City;
  • Green open spaces are the region's "lungs", which helps to offset the effects of air pollution;
  • The protection of wetlands removes the need for costly flood control structures.
